Laps, Coffee, Libraries, Barth...oh, yeah, and work, too

This has been such an interesting time for me.

There have been times I have considered myself to be quite mad for deciding to go back to school.  I just sat at my dining room table and read about 30 pages of Karl Barth...no easy task, even after drinking 2 cups of strong coffee...and wondered why I got myself into this.  And then I remembered...I want to learn more about this wonderful God whom I love and serve.  So I'll bear with reading Karl Barth, and continue drinking lots of coffee.

I've been fairly well with going to the pool a few times a week and swimming my laps.  Many thanks to my Red Cross friends, Pam and Felicia, who taught me how to swim correctly.  Or, at least, they tried to teach me how to swim correctly.   I don't know how good of a student I was.  But I tried, and I still try.  I think the lifeguards at the pool I go to secretly laugh at me when I do my 2 laps of the butterfly stroke.  I'm sure it's an amusing sight.

Life in the Youth Department is particuarly fun right now because I'm smack dab in the middle of Sunbeam, Girl Guard, and Adventure Corps Re-Registration.  There's just a ton of forms I have to wade through and fill out several different forms on.  It's loads of fun.

Well, I pray everyone is doing well.  I'll stop rambling on now...talk to ya'll later!

Confessions of a coffee addict

Hello, my name is Holly (Dawn) and I'm addicted to coffee.

I have reason to believe that God created coffee with the Graduate student in mind.  Coffee seems to what helps me focus when I'm trying to read through these many textbooks I have to read.  Especially the Karl Barth- over 700 page book I have to read (oh, and have I mentioned I've only gotten to page 22?  yikes!).  Starbucks and I are going to become close friends.  Or, should I say, closer friends.  I mean, let's face it, I was a coffee addict before I started on my Master's.  This is just an excuse to drink even more coffee.

Anyway...later people....I need to rest my brain before attempting to read some more Karl Barth...that is, after making some more coffee.

Epic Academic Adventure

Last week began my journey toward attaining my Master of Arts in Religious Studies (with a concentration in Bible).   I'm attending Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN.   Quite a long commute!   Actually, I go for week long intensives, two each semester.  I went last week, then go again for a week in November.  This semester I'm taking two classes:  Christology:  The Person and Work of Jesus Christ and a book study on Thessalonians.  I enjoyed the classes last week, although there were times I thought my brain was going to explode.    I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed right now at the thought of all the work I have to do, but it'll all be ok.

Anyway, I pray everyone is doing well!

Family Camp: An Epic Camping Adventure!

This past weekend, I was able to attend the Maryland/West Virginia's Family Camp/Labor Day Retreat. I loaded my car Thursday morning and headed for Camp Tomahawk.  And yes, I camped out...in a tent and everything.  As usual, I camped out with the Weirton, WV group.   I had a great time, especially with my friend Kathy Gilliam.  This year, I was given the responsibility for cooking lunch on Friday, so I made my world famous chili.   (it was really good!)

Anyway...August was a good month for me.  It wasn't terribly busy, which is just what I needed after a summer full of epic-ness.  August felt a  bit like the calm before the storm;  the fall is going to be a bit crazy for me.  There's the normal crazy DHQ schedule (September and October tend to be a bit crazy), and then on top of that is the fact that I'll be starting my Master's Degree program.  Yikes.

Well, I pray that everyone is doing well. Know that I'm saying extra prayers for those who have been afftected by Gustav, and those who will be serving on disaster relief.
